What is malaria?
Malaria is a disease spread by mosquitoes. Unlike viruses, such as Hepatitis A, a parasite causes malaria and cannot be vaccinated against.
Instead, you’ll need to take antimalarial medication that kills the parasite before it can grow inside your body. The antimalarials stop the parasite from maturing and therefore, from infecting your blood cells.
You’ll need to take the antimalarials before, during, and after your visit to regions where malaria is a risk. This is because the drugs need to establish themselves in your body before you travel. But also to kill any developing parasites after you return home.
